Best Time to Visit Antigua

Antigua is warm all year round, so it’s always a great pick when you’re craving some sunshine. But if you want that perfect sweet spot – warm, dry and not too crowded – December to April is your best bet. This is peak season, so prices are higher, but it’s totally worth it. The weather is ideal, with blue skies, calm seas and a nice breeze.

If you’re looking for something quieter (and a bit cheaper), May to early June is your best bet. The crowds start to thin out, and the weather is still great, though it might get a little warmer. Just keep in mind, hurricane season runs from June to November, so it’s good to watch the weather if you’re travelling during that time. But if you don’t mind a bit of rain, you can find great deals and still enjoy the island’s beauty.

Top Things to Do in Antigua

Here are some of the best things to do in Antigua that offer a mix of natural beauty, local culture and authentic experiences, perfect for when you’re looking to explore beyond the beaches.

Humble and Free Farm – A Taste of Rastafari Life

If you’re looking for a break from the beach and want to see a different side of Antigua, head to Humble and Free Farm. This small, off-grid farm run by Rastafarians gives you a real look at life on the island, away from the resorts.

The farm is run by Ras Ritchie, a friendly Rastafarian who’s all about living naturally and sustainably. You can tour the farm, see how they grow their own food, and even join in on a Jabba pot cooking experience. This was definitely a highlight for me. The food is slow-cooked the traditional way, with fresh ingredients from the farm, and cooked over an open fire in a big clay pot. The flavours were rich and hearty – each bite felt like a true taste of the island’s culture.Ras Ritchie cooking in a Jabba pot at Humble and Free farmDon’t leave without trying a glass of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Made with sun-ripened lemons from the farm, it’s super refreshing and just the right amount of tangy. This place isn’t just about food – it’s about culture, sustainability and the slow pace of island life.

This was hands-down my favourite experience and you can check out my video here.

Cannabis is legal in Antigua, and at Humble and Free, it’s part of the Rastafari way of life. Some visitors choose to try it as part of the experience, but it’s completely optional.

Travel Tip: The farm is a bit off the beaten path, so make sure to arrange transport ahead of time. You can easily book through your hotel or local tour operators.

Shirley Heights – Sunset & BBQ

If there’s one thing you can’t miss in Antigua, it’s Shirley Heights on a Sunday. Just imagine: a stunning sunset over English Harbour, steel drums playing in the background, a plate of smoky BBQ in one hand and a rum punch in the other.

This historic fort-turned-party-spot is the place to be on a Sunday evening. Live reggae and soca bands bring the vibe, and the crowd dances and sings as the sun sets behind the hills. The BBQ is amazing – juicy ribs, jerk chicken and fresh seafood right off the grill.

The atmosphere is incredible. As the sun goes down, the party really heats up with dancing and music. It might be a bit touristy, but it’s such a fun and unique experience that it’s totally worth it.

Travel Tip: It’s a popular spot, so try to get there early to grab a good spot with the best sunset view. Bring cash for entry and food – there are plenty of vendors on-site.Discover Antigua with a sunset at Shirley Heights

Kaikoconut – Floating Bar & Party Vibes

Now, this is something different. Kaikoconut is a floating beach bar and restaurant that’s part party, part giant playground on the water. It’s one of those places where the fun never stops.

To get there, you’ll need to take a boat from Jolly Harbour. The ride itself is a mini adventure, with stunning views of the Caribbean coastline.

There are two waterslides – one on each side of the catamaran. You can slide straight from the bar into the Caribbean Sea! If you’re more into a relaxed vibe, there are plenty of loungers where you can sip a cocktail and enjoy the beautiful sea views. The food is great too – grilled seafood, burgers and tropical drinks served in coconuts. It’s the perfect spot for a fun, carefree afternoon.

Cost: The boat ride and entry fee range from £40-£60, depending on the package. It’s not the cheapest day, but definitely worth it for such a unique experience.

Travel Tip: Be sure to bring sunscreen and a towel! The sun can be pretty strong, and you’ll want to dry off before heading back on the boat.KaiKoconut floating beach bar on the sea

Food Tour – A Walk Through St. Johns

If you’re a foodie, a walking food tour in St. John’s is a must. Antigua’s capital is packed with little eateries, street food stalls and markets, and the best way to explore it is on foot with a local guide.

On the tour, you’ll get to try Antigua’s national dish, saltfish and fungi – a hearty mix of salted cod and a cornmeal side that’s full of flavour. You’ll also sample fresh coconut water, a local favourite, plus seasonal fruits like mangoes, sugar apples and soursop. And don’t miss the ginger sticks and spiced nuts – they’ll have you coming back for more!

Bonus: The markets and souvenir shops are great for picking up handmade crafts, spices and local sauces to bring home. It’s a great way to take a piece of Antigua with you.

Travel Tip: Wear comfy shoes for the tour, as you’ll be walking through the busy streets. And bring cash, since many local vendors don’t take cards.St John's locals selling foods at the market

Lunch at The Hut at Jumby Bay

If you’re after a unique dining experience, The Hut at Jumby Bay is definitely worth the boat ride. Jumby Bay is one of Antigua’s most exclusive private island resorts. The scenic boat ride from the mainland is part of the experience.

Once you arrive, you’ll be treated to a leisurely lunch with stunning ocean views. The Hut serves fresh, locally sourced seafood, like grilled lobster and classic Caribbean dishes. The atmosphere is relaxed and chic, with the gentle sound of waves in the background – perfect for a slow, enjoyable meal. The Hut and Little Jumby restaurantFor an extra touch of luxury, you can even book one of the private beach huts for a more intimate dining experience with complete privacy and an unbeatable view of the Caribbean Sea.

Cost: Expect to pay around £80+ per person for lunch but the quality of the food and the exclusive vibe make it worth every penny.

Travel Tip: If you’re not staying at Jumby Bay, be sure to call ahead and make a reservation. The private island setting means the restaurant fills up quickly.
