When you think of Phuket, you probably picture beaches, beach clubs, and fancy resorts. But trust me, a day in Old Phuket Town is where the real magic happens. We went twice during our recent family holiday because we just loved the vibe.
It’s a world away from the usual touristy spots, and I guarantee it’ll surprise you.
The streets are full of history, colour, and a laid-back feel you won’t find anywhere else on the island. If you want to experience a more authentic side of Phuket, this is the place to be. It’s like stepping back in time, but with a cool, modern twist.
You’ll see Sino-Portuguese architecture, quirky street art, and so much more. If you’re planning a longer stay, be sure to check out my 2-week itinerary for Thailand to help you plan a trip full of amazing experiences across the country.
So, let me show you how to make the most of a day in Old Phuket Town.
Start Your Day in Old Phuket Town with a Stroll
First things first, start your day with a stroll down Thalang Road. It’s the main street in Old Phuket Town and the perfect place to get a feel for the place.
You’ll see colourful, colonial-style buildings with ornate details – it’s like walking through an open-air museum. The buildings here are a blend of Chinese and Portuguese influences, which makes them look different from anything else on the island.
We spent ages walking down this road, just soaking in the vibe.
Take your time here – there’s no rush. Snap some pictures, check out the street art, and just enjoy the moment. Honestly, it’s one of those places where you’ll want to wander around without any particular destination in mind. Let the streets unfold naturally.
Grab a Roti at Roti Chaofa
By now, you’ll probably be getting hungry. If you’re looking for a quick, tasty breakfast, head to Roti Chaofa. We loved stopping by here for a roti (basically a crispy, buttery flatbread) with a filling of your choice.
We went for the classic banana and condensed milk, but you can also try something savoury like egg or cheese. Whatever you pick, it’s fresh, warm and absolutely delicious.
The roti here is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside – just the right way to start your day. Grab one and keep exploring or sit down at one of the nearby tables to enjoy it in peace. Either way, you won’t regret it.
Dive into History at the Phuket Thai Hua Museum
If you want to get a bit more insight into the history of the town, pop into the Phuket Thai Hua Museum. This place is housed in an old colonial building and gives you a real sense of how Old Phuket Town came to be.
It’s full of exhibits about the town’s tin mining past, its Chinese immigrant community, and the mix of cultures that make this area so unique.
The museum isn’t huge, so you won’t need hours to explore it. But it’s definitely worth a visit to understand more about the town you’re wandering around in.
It’s one of those places where you’ll walk out feeling like you’ve learned something interesting but without the boredom of a long, stuffy museum experience.
Lunch at Raya Café
By now, you’re probably ready for lunch. Raya Café is a spot I can’t recommend enough. It’s an old-school Phuket gem, known for serving up traditional Phuket dishes. We went there twice because the food is just that good.
The crab curry is a must-try. It’s rich, creamy, and full of flavour. If you’re not in the mood for curry, go for the Mee Hokkien noodles – they’re stir-fried to perfection.
The café has a relaxed vibe, with lots of natural light and cosy corners, so it’s a great place to sit and enjoy your meal. Pair it with a refreshing iced Thai tea, and you’ve got yourself the perfect lunch.Raya Café is always busy, but in the best way. Locals and tourists mix here, so you get that authentic, lively feel that makes the place special.
Explore Soi Romanee: A Day in Old Phuket Town’s Most Charming Street
After lunch, it’s time to explore Soi Romanee. This little street is one of the prettiest in Old Phuket Town, and it’s where you’ll see those iconic pastel-coloured buildings everyone loves. It’s quieter than Thalang Road, so it’s perfect for a more relaxed walk.
Sukh and I spent some time just walking down this street, checking out the details of the buildings and the street art.
Soi Romanee used to be a red-light district, but now it’s full of cute cafés, boutique shops and art galleries. It’s a totally different vibe from the more tourist-heavy areas of Phuket, and I love how it feels like a hidden gem.Make sure to take a few pictures because the buildings here are so photogenic. You’ll want to remember this spot.
Grab a Snack from a Street Vendor
If you’re in the mood for something sweet or savory, there are plenty of street food vendors scattered around Old Phuket Town. Try O-Aew, a refreshing local dessert made of jelly, syrup, and crushed ice. It’s perfect for cooling off on a hot day.
You’ll also find vendors selling satay (grilled skewers of meat) and other small snacks as you wander around. We grabbed a few satay sticks to munch on while we walked, and they were so tasty. The street food here is fresh, flavourful, and perfect for snacking while exploring.
Visit Chinpracha House
A short walk from Thalang Road, you’ll find Chinpracha House – a stunning example of Sino-Portuguese architecture. This house used to belong to a wealthy Chinese merchant, and today it’s open to the public.
You can walk through the house and see what life was like for the people who lived here in the early 20th century.
The house is beautiful, with old furniture, antique tiles, and gorgeous woodwork. It’s also got a pretty garden, so you can take your time to explore and enjoy the surroundings. The entry fee is small, and it’s a great way to learn more about Old Phuket Town’s history.
Finish Your Day in Old Phuket Town with a Drink
After all that exploring, you’ll need a break. There are plenty of cafés and bars in Old Phuket Town where you can relax and watch the world go by. We liked to end our days at a café with a cold drink, whether it was a fresh fruit juice or a cocktail.
If you’re looking for something a little different, check out Old Phuket Town Art Street, where you can sip a drink surrounded by art galleries and creative spaces. It’s a chill spot to unwind after a busy day of exploring.
